Case Study

Precision spaceborne lidar continuing to revolutionize Earth science

For NASA’s ICESat-2 mission, Fibertek developed and delivered space-qualified laser transmitters and photon-counting detector electronics for the Advanced Topographic Laser Altimeter System (ATLAS), enabling ultra-precise, long-term measurements of Earth’s ice, vegetation, and surface elevation. The system provides exceptional accuracy and reliability in orbit, supporting critical research and Earth domain awareness through stable, high-performance laser operation over trillions of pulses in the harsh space environment. Project highlights include:

  • Enabled sub-decimeter elevation measurements spanning the globe from a 500 km altitude
  • Provided precision 532 nm laser transmitters operating at 10 kHz and receive electronics for high-resolution global mapping
  • Demonstrated extreme reliability with consistent performance after 2 trillion shots and counting with a projected life that exceeds 17 years on orbit
